HSK

[object Object]

The right HSK level is the level explicitly requested by the program, scholarship or institution you are applying to. Avoid choosing a level only because a third-party chart labels it “advanced” or “university-ready.”

The right HSK level is the level explicitly requested by the program, scholarship or institution you are applying to. Avoid choosing a level only because a third-party chart labels it “advanced” or “university-ready.”

A reliable selection process

  1. Open the current admissions requirements.
  2. Identify the minimum HSK level and score.
  3. Check whether individual section scores also apply.
  4. Confirm how recent the result must be.
  5. Select a test date that fits the document deadline.

Understand the level structure

The official HSK website presents Levels 1 through 6 and a combined Level 7-9 route within the new Three Stages, Nine Levels framework. Do not assume an older six-level comparison chart explains how a current institution will interpret every result.

Use the official page for the level you intend to take. Review its target ability, tested skills, task types and syllabus before committing to a preparation plan.

Match the test to the decision

  • University application: follow the exact program requirement.
  • Scholarship application: check both the scholarship notice and the university route.
  • Course placement: ask the teaching institution which result or diagnostic it uses.
  • Personal progress: choose a level whose official tasks are challenging but realistic.
  • Employment evidence: confirm what the employer or authority accepts before booking.

Avoid mixed-framework comparisons

HSK frameworks and institutional wording can change. The production version of this page will only publish level comparisons that can be tied to current official documentation.

If you do not have an admission requirement

Use a recent diagnostic task and the official syllabus to choose a workable level. A vocabulary count alone does not show how comfortably you can follow audio, understand a passage or complete tasks under time pressure.

The official HSK page provides a mock-test route. Use it to identify weak task types, then return to the relevant syllabus rather than preparing from a generic word list alone.
