HSK Requirements for Chinese Universities

Learn how HSK requirements can differ by university, degree, program and teaching language.

International students practicing Chinese together in a university learning space

There is no single HSK requirement for every university in China. A requirement can vary by institution, degree level, program and teaching language.

Record the complete rule

Do not record only “HSK required.” Save:

  • Required HSK level
  • Minimum total score
  • Any minimum section score
  • Result validity or recency rule
  • Exemptions and accepted alternatives
  • Applicable program and intake
  • Official source URL and review date

The university directory in the production site will present these fields as structured, reviewable records.

Check the program page first

A general admissions page may summarize a university-wide policy, while a school or department may add another condition. Record the rule for the exact degree, major, teaching language and intake you plan to enter.

When wording is unclear, ask a precise question that includes the program name, intake and the result you hold or plan to take. Keep the written reply with your application records.

Questions worth sending to admissions

  • Which HSK framework and level does this program accept for this intake?
  • Is there a minimum total score or a minimum score for any section?
  • Must the result remain valid through application, enrollment or both?
  • Are applicants from Chinese-medium prior education eligible for an exemption?
  • How should the score report or certificate be submitted and verified?

Recheck at the point of submission

Requirements can change between recruitment cycles. Reopen the program notice before you submit, confirm that the intake and teaching language match your application, and retain a copy of the source used for your decision.
