Application Timeline

Applicants choose a program through the 2027 international graduate program catalog. Program availability, degree level, teaching language and additional requirements vary across schools and departments.

Applications generally open from mid-September to the following February. Each school or department sets its own deadline, application rounds and arrangements in the program catalog. Applicants should complete the application two to three weeks before the applicable program deadline.

Tsinghua University's winter vacation runs from January 21 to February 17, 2027. The application system remains available during this period, but online review and document checks may not be completed promptly. Nationality and identity documents must be submitted by the applicable deadline and cannot be added after applications close.

Basic Eligibility

Applicants must be foreign citizens who do not hold Chinese nationality under the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China. They must hold a valid foreign passport or nationality document and meet Tsinghua University's nationality and identity-document rules.

Additional documentation rules apply to applicants who previously held Chinese citizenship and to applicants born abroad to one or two Chinese-citizen parents. These applicants must follow the university's 2027 instructions for nationality and identity materials.

Academic requirements include:

  • A master's applicant must hold a degree equivalent to a Chinese bachelor's degree.
  • A doctoral applicant must hold a degree equivalent to a Chinese master's degree.
  • Applicants graduating in 2027 may submit expected-graduation evidence, but must obtain the required recognized degree or overseas degree-authentication report before the 2027 registration date.
  • Thirty-nine schools and departments may admit qualified bachelor's degree holders directly to doctoral study under a separate application guide and program catalog.
  • Applicants must meet the conduct, health and legal-compliance requirements stated by the university.
  • Programs may set additional conditions, including professional experience requirements.

Language Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the Chinese or English standard published by the selected school, department or program in the 2027 program catalog. There is no single university-wide language score that applies to every program.

Applicants who completed their previous degree in Chinese may request permission from the relevant school or department to submit proof from the awarding institution instead of an HSK score. Scholarship applicants may still need to provide an HSK result under the scholarship's separate requirements.

Before applying, confirm:

  1. The teaching language and accepted language test.
  2. The minimum score or exemption rule set by the school or department.
  3. Whether a supervisor must be identified or contacted.
  4. Any research proposal, work-experience or additional document requirement.
  5. The exact application round and deadline.

Application Documents

Applications are submitted through the Tsinghua University Graduate Application System. The university-wide application materials include:

  • A personal statement completed in the application system. Doctoral applicants also upload a brief research experience statement or research proposal.
  • Degree certificates and the applicable degree-authentication reports. Current students may initially provide expected-graduation evidence.
  • Complete academic transcripts. Master's applicants submit undergraduate transcripts; doctoral applicants submit both master's and undergraduate transcripts. A separate GPA statement is required when the transcript does not show an overall GPA.
  • The Chinese or English language report required by the selected program.
  • Two recommendation letters from associate professors, professors, scholars with an equivalent title or senior professionals in a relevant industry.
  • The personal-information page of an ordinary private passport and, when applicable, the diplomatic-visa page.
  • Nationality and identity materials required under the 2027 instructions.
  • Any additional material listed by the program or school.
  • The separate materials required for a bachelor's degree holder applying directly to doctoral study, when applicable.

Certificates, authentication documents and supporting evidence must be original documents in Chinese or English. A document in another language must be accompanied by the original and a notarized Chinese or English translation. Tsinghua requires color scans made with a scanner and does not accept phone or camera photographs, photocopies or incomplete applications.

The application fee is paid online when the materials are uploaded. Chinese Government Scholarship applicants must also pay the application fee. The fee is non-refundable, including when an application is unsuccessful or cannot be completed.

Review and Admission Process

Tsinghua uses an application-and-assessment process for international graduate admission. A school or department expert group reviews the application materials and selects candidates for a comprehensive assessment.

The comprehensive assessment is generally interview-based. The responsible school or department sets the content, format, requirements and schedule and notifies the selected applicants.

Admission decisions consider both the document review and comprehensive assessment. Applicants can check their result through the graduate application system. Schwarzman Scholars applicants follow the result process provided by that program.

Visa and Enrollment
