Compare official Nanjing University scholarship routes for 2027, including Chinese Government Scholarship Type A, Type B and Youth of Excellence programs.

Nanjing University publishes separate scholarship instructions for international students. The route, eligible degree level, application system and deadline differ by award. Chinese Government Scholarship Type B: High-Level Postgraduate Program

This is Nanjing University's principal university-nominated Chinese Government Scholarship route for 2027 master's and doctoral applicants. Candidates apply first through Nanjing University's international student system. Applicants who pass the university assessment receive a pre-admission letter and then complete the China Scholarship Council application.

Eligibility and language requirements

The official 2027 notice requires applicants to be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health. Master's applicants must hold a bachelor's degree and be no older than 35; doctoral applicants must hold a master's degree and be no older than 40. Applicants graduating in 2027 may submit a pre-graduation certificate, but must be able to obtain the required degree by July 2027.

For Chinese-taught programs, the admission threshold is HSK 4 for natural sciences, engineering and medicine, and HSK 5 for liberal arts, social sciences and business. The notice sets higher HSK levels for graduation. For English-taught programs, the listed admission evidence is IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, TOEFL Essentials 9 or Duolingo English Test 100; the published graduation requirement includes HSK 3.

Applicants cannot hold another Chinese scholarship or Chinese funding for the same 2027-2028 period. Program participation and final scholarship selection remain subject to both university assessment and CSC review.

Funding and duration

The official notice lists:

  • a monthly stipend of CNY 3,000 for master's students or CNY 3,500 for doctoral students;
  • a tuition waiver;
  • an annual CNY 800 health-insurance allowance; and
  • accommodation in the university's international student dormitory for the scholarship period.

The scholarship duration is two to three years for a master's degree and four years for a doctorate. Recipients must study full-time at Nanjing University and pass the annual scholarship review.

2027 application sequence

  1. Apply through the Nanjing University China International Student Service System between November 1, 2026 and January 20, 2027, selecting CSC Scholarship Type B.
  2. Upload the academic records, degree evidence, two recommendations, language evidence, personal statement, physical examination, passport page, recent non-criminal record and any program-specific material required by the official notice.
  3. Monitor the university system for the initial review and any resubmission request. School or department assessment is scheduled for late February 2027, with results expected in the first half of March.
  4. If Nanjing University issues a pre-admission letter, submit the CSC application by March 17, 2027 using agency number 10284 and program type B.
  5. Wait for CSC's final decision. University nomination or pre-admission does not guarantee the scholarship.

The university expects the academic year to begin in early September 2027; the admission notice will contain the exact registration date.

Chinese Government Scholarship Type A Programs

Nanjing University accepts candidates nominated through several Type A channels, including the Bilateral Program, EU Program, Great Wall Program, AUN Program, PIF Program and Youth of Excellence Scheme. Depending on the channel, support may cover undergraduate or graduate degree study, general scholars or senior scholars.

Type A applicants do not apply directly to Nanjing University for the scholarship. They apply through the responsible dispatching authority, such as a government agency, Chinese embassy or consulate, the EU mission, a national UNESCO commission, the AUN Secretariat or the PIF Secretariat. Applicants can list Nanjing University as a preferred institution, but must follow the authority's own eligibility rules and deadline.

The official university page says all Nanjing University majors are open to Type A applications except part-time programs such as the MBA. Availability under a particular sending channel still needs to be confirmed with that channel before applying.

Youth of Excellence Scheme of China

Nanjing University's 2027 Youth of Excellence notice covers three English-taught master's programs:

  • International Relations: China and Global Affairs;
  • Information Resources Management, including the listed IM&DA and IM&DH directions; and
  • Sociology: Contemporary China Studies.

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens under 45, hold at least a bachelor's degree and have at least three years of work experience. The program targets division-level government officials, senior managers, university or research administrators, and applicants with relevant international-organization employment or internship experience. The listed English threshold is IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, TOEFL Essentials 9 or Duolingo English Test 100.

The two-year program follows a 1+1 structure: full-time coursework and research at Nanjing University in the first academic year, followed by dissertation work in the applicant's home country during the second year and a return to China for the defence. The scholarship covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, living expenses, comprehensive medical insurance and the specified economy-class travel for study and thesis defence.

2027 application sequence

  1. Apply in Nanjing University's system from January 1 to March 1, 2027, selecting CSC Scholarship Type A.
  2. Submit the official document set, including employment or internship evidence.
  3. Applicants passing the school assessment are expected to receive results by March 20, 2027.
  4. Pre-admitted applicants must complete the CSC application by March 29, 2027, using agency number 1563 and program type A.

Because this award has a narrow professional profile and a program-specific application route, candidates should read the full official notice before selecting it in either system.

Nanjing Municipal Scholarship

The municipal scholarship is intended to support international students studying at universities in Nanjing. Nanjing University's English page describes a one-time CNY 10,000 award for undergraduate students and a one-time CNY 20,000 award for master's students. Its eligibility section also refers to doctoral applicants, but the displayed award table does not state a doctoral amount.

The same page requires non-Chinese citizenship, good health and academic standing, compliance with Chinese law and university rules, and no simultaneous scholarship from the Chinese government, a local government or another organization. It lists age limits of under 30 for undergraduate applicants, under 35 for master's applicants and under 40 for doctoral applicants.

The page's application window is July 1-31, 2024. Do not reuse that date or assume the listed amounts for a 2027 application. Wait for a new Nanjing University notice confirming the eligible student categories, award amounts, document list and application window.

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

This scholarship supports eligible applicants preparing for Chinese-language teaching and related work. Nanjing University's current page includes master's and bachelor's degree routes, one-year study and one-semester study, each with its own HSK and HSKK threshold.

Applicants make two online submissions: one through the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship platform and one through Nanjing University's international student system. A qualified recommending institution is part of the process.

The current page is for programs beginning in September 2026 and March 2027. It states an October 31 deadline for the March 2027 one-semester intake. It does not establish the September 2027 categories, age calculation date, language thresholds or deadline. Applicants seeking autumn 2027 entry should wait for the next official notice.

Confucius China Studies Program

Nanjing University's program overview describes doctoral fellowships in Sinology, China studies and related humanities and social sciences, along with research, academic exchange, translation and publication activities. The university page links applicants to the program sponsor's platform for detailed categories and current rules.

The overview does not provide a Nanjing University-specific 2027 deadline or funding schedule. Confirm the active fellowship category, host-supervisor arrangement, application systems, duration and current financial support on the sponsor's platform and with the relevant Nanjing University academic unit.

Build a Reliable 2027 Application Plan

  1. Choose the exact degree program and teaching language before selecting a scholarship.
  2. Match the route to the correct application authority: Nanjing University for Type B, an external dispatching authority for most Type A channels, or the two-stage university and sponsor process for specialist awards.
  3. Prepare degree records, transcripts, recommendations, language results, passport material, a recent physical examination and non-criminal record early.
  4. Check whether the scholarship permits concurrent funding and whether a pre-admission letter or institutional recommendation is required.
  5. Use only the deadline and agency number shown for the exact scholarship route. The 2027 Type B and Youth of Excellence routes use different CSC agency numbers.
  6. Recheck the official notice immediately before submitting, since programs, document templates and system instructions can be updated during the application cycle.
