Shanghai Jiao Tong University publishes several scholarship routes for international students. The application channel depends on the study level and award: some applicants apply through a Chinese embassy or consulate, while others request scholarship consideration within the SJTU admission application.
2027 application status: The standing scholarship pages reviewed for this guide do not provide a complete 2027 application calendar. One language-scholarship page still describes 2025 entry and a March 2026 start, while the 2026 graduate admission cycle is already historical. Use this page to compare routes, then confirm the deadline, eligible program and funding terms in the official notice for the intended intake.

Chinese Government Scholarship
Type A Through an Embassy or Consulate
SJTU directs undergraduate applicants for the Chinese Government Scholarship to the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for their country. The applicant selects Shanghai Jiao Tong University as the first-choice institution in the scholarship application. The available categories, schedule and award terms are controlled by the responsible dispatching authority and the China Scholarship Council.
International graduate applicants may also use this Type A route. SJTU states that applicants must choose between applying through the university and applying through an embassy or consulate; duplicate applications through both channels are not permitted. Country schedules vary, so applicants must check the responsible authority rather than using a general university date.
Type B Through SJTU
The university-administered Chinese Government Scholarship route is available to incoming international graduate applicants. Applicants select Apply for Scholarship through SJTU in the SJTU application system and complete the required CSC application.
On the CSC system, the official SJTU instructions specify Type B and agency number 10248. A positive university review may lead to an SJTU pre-admission notice for the CSC submission. This is a two-system process, so completion of only the SJTU or only the CSC form is not enough where both are required.
The standing official page also explains that SJTU does not provide a free dormitory under this route. Instead, accommodation support is administered as a subsidy according to the scholarship coverage, and recipients may seek on-campus accommodation or live off campus. Applicants should confirm the current amount and housing process in their cycle notice.
Short-term and China Link Routes
For short-term Chinese Government Scholarship study, SJTU directs applicants to the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate and says it does not issue a pre-admission notice. The official scholarship page also links to the China Link Scholarship Program for international students undertaking academic or research activity in China.
These are separate from the regular degree application route. Duration, eligibility and the responsible application channel should be checked against the current CSC and SJTU instructions.
Shanghai Government Scholarship
SJTU states that the Shanghai Government Scholarship is integrated into the university's scholarship process for international applicants. Undergraduate applicants do not submit a separate Shanghai Government Scholarship application.
For international graduate applicants, scholarship consideration is combined with the program application. Applicants select Apply for scholarships through SJTU in the scholarship section of the SJTU international application system. The university page does not present one permanent funding package or deadline, so applicants should rely on the current admission guide for the exact award category and coverage.
SJTU Scholarship
Undergraduate Chinese-taught Programs
The standing SJTU Scholarship page describes three award classes for undergraduate Chinese-taught programs. Applicants request scholarship consideration while completing the online admission form, and recipients are selected through a comprehensive ranking of academic and interview performance.
The page describes the first class as tuition, a living allowance, accommodation subsidy and insurance; the second class as tuition, accommodation subsidy and insurance; and the third class as accommodation subsidy and insurance. It lists a four-year period for each class. Applicants must be formally admitted and may not hold another scholarship at the same time.
Because these figures appear on a standing page rather than a dated 2027 notice, applicants should confirm that the amounts and duration remain valid for their intended intake before making a financial plan.
Undergraduate English- and French-taught Programs
SJTU separately lists three scholarship classes for English- and French-taught undergraduate programs. The first class is described as tuition, a living allowance, accommodation subsidy and insurance; the second as 50% of tuition, an accommodation subsidy and insurance; and the third as 25% of tuition and insurance.
The official page refers applicants to the Common Application system and requires the relevant English-language evidence for an English-taught program. Admission, language and scholarship requirements should be checked against the chosen program because the central page does not replace its current prospectus.
Graduate Programs
SJTU's central page says university scholarships are available for international doctoral programs and may include a monthly stipend, standard tuition waiver, comprehensive insurance and partial accommodation support.
For international master's programs, it distinguishes the Master's SJTU Scholarship from a tuition-waiver scholarship. The university scholarship may include a monthly stipend, standard tuition waiver, insurance and partial accommodation support, while the tuition-waiver award includes standard tuition and insurance. Individual schools may publish additional awards in their own prospectuses.
Graduate applicants should read the scholarship instructions shown inside the SJTU application system. School-level awards may have different eligibility, funding and selection procedures from the central university routes.
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
The official SJTU page lists degree and non-degree routes connected with Chinese-language education, including a bachelor's degree in Chinese, the MTCSOL master's degree, one-academic-year Chinese study and one-semester Chinese language and literature study.
However, the displayed degree information refers to September 2025 entry, and the semester route refers to September 2025 or March 2026. Its HSK and HSKK thresholds therefore describe that published cycle, not confirmed 2027 requirements. Applicants should wait for the next SJTU application guide before relying on program dates, language thresholds or scholarship duration.
Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program
SJTU lists the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program under Outreach Scholarship. The central page describes AFLSP as supporting study opportunities at leading universities in Greater China, Japan and Korea, but it does not publish current SJTU eligibility, degree scope, funding or an application calendar.
Treat AFLSP as a specialist route requiring a current program or school notice. Its presence in the central directory does not confirm that it is open for every intake or every SJTU program.
Build a 2027 Application Plan
- Choose the exact degree, school, teaching language and intake before comparing scholarships.
- Decide whether the application belongs with a home-country authority, CSC and SJTU together, or only the SJTU admission system.
- Do not submit both Type A and Type B Chinese Government Scholarship applications when the university instructions prohibit duplicate channels.
- For SJTU-administered routes, select the scholarship option inside the admission application and follow any additional instructions shown by the system.
- Check whether a school publishes its own scholarship prospectus in addition to the central university routes.
- Confirm restrictions on holding another award, as well as the current tuition, stipend, accommodation and insurance terms.
- Use the official notice for the intended intake to confirm deadlines and documents before submitting or paying an application fee.
