China Studies Program Ph.D. Fellowships
The China Studies Program has two routes for humanities and social-science research related to China:
- the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship supports registered doctoral students at overseas universities for one semester to two academic years at Wuhan University; and
- the Ph.D. in China Fellowship supports master's graduates and graduating master's students for a Wuhan University doctorate, normally lasting four years.
Joint-research applicants need HSK Level 3 or above. Degree applicants need HSK Level 5 or above. Both routes require applicants to conduct their research in Chinese.
Support includes tuition, living expenses, an international round-trip ticket and insurance, with access to relevant academic activities and research-funding opportunities. Applicants submit through both the China Studies Program system and Wuhan University's system.
The published cycle is for the 2026-2027 academic year and closed on February 28, 2026. It does not provide a new application window for entry later in 2027.
Chinese Government Scholarship Type B: High-Level Postgraduate Program
This university-nominated route supports master's and doctoral study in Chinese- and English-taught programs. The latest Wuhan University cycle covered tuition and the application fee, university accommodation, a living allowance and comprehensive medical insurance. International travel was self-funded.
For the 2026 cycle, master's applicants needed a bachelor's degree and had to be under 35; doctoral applicants needed a master's degree and had to be under 40. The minimum academic result was 3.0/4.0, 3.75/5.0 or 75%. Chinese-taught study required HSK 4, while direct entry to the major generally required HSK 5. English-taught programs required TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0, previous English-medium study or the stated native-speaker exemption. English-taught clinical medicine master's applicants also needed HSK 4.
The 2026 application period ran from November 15, 2025 to February 25, 2026. Applicants used the CSC Type B route with agency number 10486 and also applied through Wuhan University's system. Wuhan University has not yet established these requirements or dates for the 2027 cycle.
Chinese Government Scholarship Type B: Belt and Road Program
The latest Belt and Road route supported selected master's and doctoral programs in surveying, mapping, geographic information and software engineering. Eligibility was limited to citizens of Belt and Road partner countries. Teaching language depended on the program.
The 2026 scholarship waived tuition and the application fee and included university accommodation, a living allowance and medical insurance. International travel was self-funded. Master's applicants had to be under 35 and doctoral applicants under 40. Chinese-taught programs required HSK 4 or above; English-taught programs required TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0 or an accepted exemption.
The 2026 application period ran from December 15, 2025 to April 15, 2026. Applicants used CSC program type B and agency number 10486, followed by the Wuhan University system. The eligible countries, programs, language thresholds and deadline require a new notice before they can be applied to 2027.
Chinese Government Scholarship Type A: Bilateral Program
The Bilateral Program is administered through a dispatching authority in the applicant's home country, often the Chinese embassy or consulate. The 2026 route covered undergraduate, postgraduate, general scholar and senior scholar categories. Undergraduate study was Chinese-taught; graduate and non-degree study could be Chinese- or English-taught where available.
In the 2026 cycle, age limits were under 25 for undergraduate study, 35 for master's study, 40 for doctoral study, 45 for general scholars and 50 for senior scholars. Chinese-taught graduate study required HSK 4, while undergraduate, general-scholar and senior-scholar routes required HSK 3. English-taught programs used TOEFL 80, IELTS 6.0 or an accepted alternative.
Each dispatching authority sets its own application window and nomination process. The 2026 Wuhan University information does not establish the authority, deadline, available categories or requirements for a 2027 application.
Youth of Excellence Scheme of China
Wuhan University's latest Youth of Excellence cycle offered two English-taught master's programs: Geospatial Information Technology / Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and Public Health. Both followed a two-year 1+1 format, with the first year at Wuhan University and thesis work in the applicant's home country during the second year, followed by the defence in China.
The 2026 full-scholarship route was for non-Chinese citizens under 45 who held at least a bachelor's degree and had at least three years of work experience. Its professional profile covered government officials, senior managers, university or research administrators and applicants with relevant international-organization experience. The language threshold was TOEFL 80 or IELTS 6.0, with stated exemptions.
The 2026 Wuhan University deadline was March 1, followed by the CSC deadline on March 31. Applicants used CSC program type A and agency number 1563. The university must publish a new cycle before these programs, conditions and dates can be treated as 2027 requirements.
